CHAPTER 8

BRUNO

Despite the tension between Gloria and me, we continue to work as we head into the weekend, because my dear brother Tommy wanted to have the shop up and running already.

In the real world, you can’t just snap your fingers and start a business. In Costa-land, anything is possible. At least that’s what he thinks.

There’s no mention of the tooshie conversation with Gloria, but I can’t stop looking at her tooshie anytime she gets up from her desk which now faces mine.

Thanks a lot, Frankie.

I’ve never been less productive.

My computer is set up on the left side of my desk and hers is on the right so we can still see each other. I alternately catch her staring out the window and staring at me.

Or shooting death glares, I can’t be sure.

But I don’t mind her eyes on me. That is unless she’s plotting something. There was the mention of glitter. I make it a habit to open my desk drawers slowly in case she planted a glitter bomb. I wouldn’t be surprised.

Despite Gloria’s good looks, smooth cheeks that so often lift with a smile, sparkly champagne eyes, delicate hands, and the way her upper lip is slightly bigger than her lower, she reminds me of my ex a bit. But in the good ways—she’s intelligent, perceptive, and pays attention to detail. There’s really no comparison, but I’ll admit it does intimidate me.

Working together here on the second floor of a pizza and pie shop is a world away from the finance capital of the country, but like Malonie, Gloria has the potential to get to the top. Though, I don’t get the sense she’d step on anyone with her Santa’s Slippers, except maybe me.

Although, my foot is fully healed, so I could probably outrun her if necessary.

Her gaze drifts to mine and holds for a long moment.

Does she want to stomp all over me with her high heels? Blow me up with a glitter bomb? Cause me to choke on some pie? I can’t be too careful. Workplace sabotage is real.

I arch an eyebrow, recalling the faceoff in the stairwell yesterday when we almost pressed pause on our quarrel. Warmth swirls through me.

The corner of Gloria’s lip twitches with a smirk as if she reads my mind. Or she’s plotting. It could go either way.

“Did you need something?” I ask.

A quiet, neglected voice that comes from some place in my chest tells me that I need her. Before she answers, I say, “Thank you for agreeing to put in the overtime. I’ll be sure to compensate you accordingly.”

“It’s fine. The less time I spend at the apartment on Acorn Lane, the better. I’m lucky I’ve survived this long. I mean, with the subpar living conditions and all.”

While I climbed to the top, resulting in my NYC penthouse, I resided in some shady places, but the idea of Gloria enduring nights alone in the dilapidated apartment sends a tick through my jaw. “Is the ceiling still leaking? Krumpus didn’t fix it?”

“If he did anything, which I doubt, he made it worse.
